In a historic moment for CBU, the Capers men’s soccer program will proudly host the U Sports National Championship for the first time in the fall of 2023.
The Capers men’s varsity soccer program is a prestigious squad that has showcased its dominance on the field. With a history of excellence capped by a national championship win in 2017, the team’s relentless pursuit for another title was finally fulfilled in 2023. To document the men’s road to nationals, CBU partnered with Creo Visions to tell their story.
The Capers then tested their skills in friendly matches against the youth squads of Mansfield Town FC and Blackburn Rovers FC and Fleetwood Town FC. These exhibition games offered them a great practical assessment of their training progress and team chemistry.
The culmination of this enriching experience was a visit to iPro Stadium, Home of Derby County FC. The Caper’s participated as part of the guard of honor before the EFL League One Match against Oxford United, marking a memorable finale to their overseas trip.
AUS Season
The Capers stellar 9-0-3 record during the regular season earned them a spot at the top of the leaderboard. However, in the AUS finals, the Capers fell just short against the X-Men of STFX, securing second place—a setback, but not a defeat as both teams would still advance to the National Championships. Undeterred, they remained focused on their ultimate goal: the national title.
U Sports National Championships
Cape Breton University’s journey at the 2023 U Sports Men’s Soccer National Championship, hosted at Ness Timmons Field in Sydney, Nova Scotia, was a compelling narrative of strategic mastery and collective effort.
Seeded fifth, the Capers kicked off their national campaign with a robust win against the UQTR Patriotes in the quarterfinals. Progressing through a challenging semifinal against the Mount Royal Cougars, the team’s synergy and resilience were on full display, culminating in a thrilling victory in the finals against the Montreal Carabins before a supportive home crowd.
From pre-season to the moment the Caper’s lifted the coveted Championship trophy, we at Creo Visions were honored to accompany the men’s historic journey. To commemorate the achievements of the 2023 Caper’s squad, a 3 piece documentary was created so the players, families and fans could relive this historic road to nationals across time.
